It’s RPG Maker 2003, I’d guess the battlebacks are probably done via the Frame background (which allowed for a foreground image and a background image) that could be implemented in that version and utilized in the terrain settings for battle backgrounds. I think that moving background option was dropped in XP onward unfortunately.

I’d guess the normal black background has transparent cutouts and then a frame with patterns is scrolling horizontally, vertically, or diagonally behind it to create the animation effect. It’s honestly super neat and there’s a ton of potential that can be cranked out of RPG Maker 2003’s battle background system.

That’s actually completely correct.
Some of the backgrounds are just cool patterns behind interesting shapes.

Others are actually different animation frames that are interlaced together to form actual animations (simple ones at least.)
Since the cutouts are only 1 pixel wide they only show one frame of animation at a time.
It’s like encoding a flipbook onto a single image.

And some are combinations of the two, or similar tricks that hide part of the image and reveal it as it moves.

This is actually pretty similar to how Earthbound does it’s own backgrounds. it just takes two layers and puts them on top of each other and moves and wiggles them in different ways. EB has the advantage of having semi-transparency and the ability to change palettes though.

    Really sad news today

I was on chapter 7 and I’ve run into a game breaking bug in which the left arrow key seems to be stuck down. That persists if I restart the game, go into the Unity Star and back out, etc. It’s really frustrating that I’ll have to restart if I want to continue. Any other ideas as to what I can try?

Restart your computer. I don’t know why that works but it does.

    sprite KA_Gamer

Yup! Odd that restarting the game several times didn’t make a difference. For what its worth, this happened to me while I was transitioning from flying in space to walking around the cabin, and when it happened, no music would play.

      sprite ChaosMiles07

It actually might have something to do with the drivers that the game needs, but might also be rewritten by another program. No way of (easily) knowing which drivers and which programs, though.

Though because your system gets rebooted, this means that the drivers will get reloaded, (temporarily) resolving that issue.

      Gonna rant a bit….
I finished CogDis for the third time now (can I call myself a devoted fan already?). But some things never change, and they just had to be the annoying things.
By the way, if the creator of CogDis reads this, don’t take this as an offense. Your game is still awesome.

First, although I think it was mechanically impossible due to engine limits, a run button would be nice.
Second, why can’t the characters move diagonally? The ship can do it, why not you? Some areas were even made with diagonal walking in mind.
Third thing is the biggest part.
You have to haul your carcass all over the solar system to kill a squid that keeps running away, expending all your savings for fuel. Then you finally get the last Reboot Orb and board the Mothership, the most annoying area in the game. The atmosphere and music excellently fit the concept of the dungeon, but the enemies and the boss are just too much. I had to grind for a day to crank up my characters to level 50+ so I could have a good chance to beat him. Just to give Niiue the ability to go godmode at the final boss and to get a different (but arguably the best) ending.

(Topic is still active, don’t kill me for bump pls)

However, what CogDis did better than ALL Mother games combined is infinite inventory space. Not worrying about “full inventory” popups was a relief.

As an RPG Maker 2003 gamedev I can guess the lack of run button and diagonal movement is due entirely to the caterpillar system (what allows your party members to follow behind you) so you’re entirely spot on with engine limitations! It’s technically not possible to hard code that system into RPG maker 2003 so it must be done through a series of on-map events (so four NPCs if you will). If handish used kentona’s Cooler Caterpillar System like I did for one RPG Maker 2003 project it’s possible it would just be way more trouble than it’s worth to edit that code to react to both a run button and a diagonal movement code (which tend to be buggy at best in my experience in 2003, the thing’s quite finicky). Though without the caterpillar system a run button is 100% possible, though the standard speed in RM2k3 is generally fast enough to not need one, CogDis simply uses a lower than average movement speed for the engine. I imagine this was done to emulate EarthBound’s standard movement speed. (As a side note, the movement speeds don’t really have nice middle-grounds with each other. Standard is good but a bit fast and one note below it is probably what CogDis runs at and is a bit sluggish at times).

I’ll definitely agree that designing areas around diagonal movement despite the lack thereof is a bit odd but it’s not the first rm2k3 game I’ve seen do that.

The difficulty definitely sounds like a lot though. I remember trying the moon dungeon in the last build of the game (which I’m guessing leads to the best ending in that chain?) and I just gave up after getting brutally wrecked lmao.

The Moon is completely optional. To get the best ending (Severance), you have to do the Mothership quest and teach Niiue Nightmare Empower. It is needed in the Paradox ending incase you missed the Knowledge Stone on the MS.

Believe me, we tried on the run button and diagonal movement.
Run buttons tend to break in 2k3.
Diagonal movement tends to get stuck in or pass through thin walls. (thus why it was allowed in space)
And both had a tendency to pass through game events and triggers without triggering them, especially if the player times a button press wrong or spams it.
So basically the whole game could break.

So, for someone who want to play Cogdis with normal Mr.Saturn font on phone or something — be happy, because EasyRPG now partly support custom exfont files. Partly, because now it don’t look for exfonts in exe, only in game folder, so just throw attached file into Cogdis folder and use one of the continuous builds of EasyRPG Player that was build after May, 6 of 2018. You can download the latest build from here

Also, in some next patch, can you add some memory to ship’s sound system? Because I want to keep playing that song I have chosen after I had leave ship and enter back.

Here some screenshots. You can see that fonts are normal now! Battle layout is still different, that is probably that “hacking” thing devs have mentioned.

Magicant Edition (Crav’s dev copy that he released on CogDiscord; check the pins in #announcements) has that feature implemented (there have been some instances in which the default track plays, but it’s rare. It almost always remembers the most recent song.).

Doing some extensive testing a la a playthrough on EasyRPG Player Vita, and here’s some things I’ve noticed that may be classified as issues (using the Magicant Edition found in the CogDis Discord):

        - PP and ATB bar overlap each other (though both are still readable and can be made out with a little effort)
        - Enemies and Battle Backgrounds aren’t animated
        - When dual-wielding pistol weapons, Col. Saturn only attacks once
        - Enemy Encounter sound doesn’t stop upon entering the battle transition, and as such plays over the battle music for a brief moment at the start.
        - Dr. Saturns do not heal status effects, but hotels and similar do.

All this time, and I’m still as useful as a caramel.

        sprite Sonuvox

I got to the part where you get back to “the present” with the Phase Distorter on the ship after Niiue talks to you in his ghost-like form where the 6 doors are around you and he said that he ‘installed’ a map into the ship, but when I try to access the map, it gives me an error and completely shuts down the game, something about not detecting an event. Any help?

        sprite Crav

        • artistorm
        • mafia
        • dragon

I have no clue what could be causing that.
Generally that error message will pop up if you change areas in the middle of an event processing (The event stops existing half way through it’s process)
Or if one event tries to give a command to another that doesn’t exist.
Neither of those should be happening there. The map event doesn’t even reference any others and you’re not changing screens so I’m stumped.

How much fuel do you have? Have you tried more than once and gotten the same results? are you at any particular planet?

        sprite Sonuvox

I had 10 fuel, the 10 fuel that you get once you talk to Niiue in the apocalyptic-Giegue-destroyed-the-world-alternate-future plus like 3 fuel that I had before. I have tried multiple times, like on the gas station, and away from it. I’m not at a particular planet, I’m at the gas station you’re put at after talking to Niiue. I was wondering if for some reason in one of my files the map is just missing? Not sure what to do from here, I’ll try to go to another planet or something. Kinda bummed about it, since I’m usually lost in space, so a map would really help. I don’t know if it tracks your spaceship on there, but I’ve ran out of fuel in space about 3+ times. It sucks.

        sprite crybabytif

I’m pretty sure that, if you have to pay for it despite it saying it’s free, then it’s highly likely the bandcamp’s free downloads (which, when first starting out, is 200) just got maxed out at one point and they, at that time, switched to paid and just forgot to switch back. But, considering it’s been a good while, you should be able to find an unofficial link somewhere (or you could just listen to it on YouTube).

Guys, I was digging in the game files nad found a really strange music track called “gas.mp3”. It starts with a slow, deep, menacing drum, then slowly enters into a slowed down, a bit distorted second part of the War against Giygas intro while cheers or chants of something that sounds suspiciously like a nazi rally can be heard. Any possible explanation?

So, it’s been a few years, but I’ve decided to give this game another go. I’ve a question, though. I know that if you miss the Points of Power the first time, you can do them again in Chapter 7 and they’re supposed to be harder. I’m curious about experiencing this, but the game will be a lot harder without the abilities gained from the Points of Power.

Is it worth it? Because I’m at the point where I have to decide and I’m not sure what I want to do about it.

Also, I’ve heard mention of a Discord server, but none of the links I’ve found work.
