EarthBound Taught Me How To Love!!
The year was 1997. A dark shadow covered the face of Tampa Reginal hospital. Suddenly, a child was born. His name... was M1997.
Some unknown ammount of time earlier, my mother (who, at that time, worked at a flea market) obtained a copy of EarthBound for free, due to the fact that it wasn't selling very well (I found out why years later).
At about seven years old, I began playing some SNES video games. I remember playing - and losing - Star Fox, Chrono Trigger, and Mario Paint. Yeah, I actually LOST at Mario Paint!
Only one game did me and my mother play all the way through: EarthBound.
Although I didn't understand too much about what I was playing, I loved the game. I distinctly remember naming the characters Chris (an abbreviation of my name), Dusti (a girl at the elementry school I used to go to), Mark (named after my dad), and Matt (an abbreviation of my little brother Matthew's name... little did I know that in future years, Matthew, like Poo, would be picky about certain foods).
Time passed, and after beating EarthBound, the SNES - along with all its games - were placed into the garage. But the memory, the pure enjoyment of EarthBound remained with me forever.
Then came Brawl. I didn't have a Wii at the time, but my friend Christian did. That game revived my memories of EarthBound. But something was odd... who the heck was Lucas!?!?
Thank goodness for Wikipedia! I looked up EarthBound on there and found out about Mothers 1 and 3. A few years later, I found out about Starmen.net and EarthBound Central.
But there's another story in this mess. Between discovering the Mother games and the fanbase, I had FOUND EarthBound in the garage! After an ordeal hooking it up - my grandma came over to help us - I began playing the game again.
Joy. That's the only way to express it. I had my game back. This game influenced my life in so many ways... and it was about to influence me in one more way.
Before re-playing EarthBound, I had met a girl named Caitlynn. She (at that time) didn't look too pretty... and, at that time, that was my only concern in a girl. Stupid, you might say? I completely, utterly agree with you. It was while I was playing EarthBound that I received my revelation.
I looked at the graphics: simplistic, yet I could make out everything that was there. The dialogue: witty, humorous, and sometimes it made me think. I looked at everything in the game... and realized that fancyness isn't what a game is. It isn't huge explosions, gigantic monsters, or hot babes with chainsaws... not that I own any games with that sort of stuff in it, but you get the point.
And then, I saw Caitlynn again... and realized I loved her.
That was all last year. Now, Caitlynn is my girlfriend and I am a part of the Starmen.net community. No... I am now a part of the EarthBound Family. Praise the Lord.
