Earthbound College Essay

My life in 16 Bits

After the ominous crash behind his house in the late hours of night, he decided it was necessary to investigate. On a small quest with a few friends, he climbed local hills only to find a mysterious and tiny meteorite sitting at the peak. A beam of glowing gold light shot out of the meteorite, producing a small flying creature resembling a bee. It was this peculiar insect named Buzz Buzz who explained the devastation existing in the future. Buzz Buzz was sent to the past to warn him about it, and tell him that he was the world’s final and first hope. Taking the cracked baseball bat out of his sister’s room, he walked off into the distance to save the world.
Described here is the intro to an old videogame named Earthbound. This game happens to be my favorite one ever created. This one game has somehow had a large subconscious effect on my life. I’ve watched movies, I’ve read books, and I’ve been inspired, but no other form of mindless entertainment has had an effect on my mind as powerful as this game has. Why it did that, I cannot explain. The story is somewhat original, but it isn’t anything necessarily significant. It was not meant to impact lives the way it did to me.
Right around this time in my life when preparing for college should be my main priority, I just so happened to coincidentally remember my days of playing Earthbound. I haven’t played the game in at least a year or two, but every now and then I still think about it. I’ll think about the joy it brought to my young life and the various moods it put me in as I progressed through the levels. One night while lying in bed and pondering the thousands of thoughts on my mind, I decided to develop a college essay on this game, comparing it to my own life. I believe anyone can compare any story to their lives, but I found a few very personal comparisons between the protagonist, Ness, and I. I found this late night effort successful, and this is how it goes.
To start it off, there is a call to adventure. In Ness’s life, a bee traveling a meteorite is his calling. Unfortunately I haven’t been told to do anything from a bee riding a meteor, nor do I expect to ( if I did, I’d probably listen to it), but I do have my own “Buzz Buzzes” in my life. Arriving at high school was the start of my own “Buzz Buzz” moments. People telling me of the challenges and goals ahead are what I consider to be my calls to adventure. I’ve found myself accepting these calls a little more as I continue.
Ness goes on a whole entire epic adventure through many worlds to get to the end. He finds struggles in challenging enemies and mind-bending puzzles, but he eventually pushes on. The accumulation of experience points along with newly discovered abilities gives Ness more confidence, strength and hope to succeed on his mission. Though he does find his way mostly on his own, he finds aid through friends. He also loses some friends as they betray him. His best friend Pokey decides to turn on him and join sides with the enemy. Soon afterwards, after traveling alone desperate for a direction, he finds and saves Paula, who stays with him the whole rest of the time. I found a very similar situation in my own life. I had a good friend who I feel like betrayed me, leaving me to be on my own in a lonely, clueless world. He was my Pokey. He showed me one of the main trials in life that must be experienced: People can be harmful as well as helpful; you only need to know who will bring which. I found my Paula after. Maybe a year later or so, I found her, and she has since helped me and pointed in positive directions for me to follow.
I like to think of my journey as my time of getting ready for college. The challenges are still coming, and they become harder in difficulty as I go on, but the end of my journey lies ahead. I have more objectives to complete, but I will be there soon enough. With my experience growing and the discovery of new abilities I didn’t know I possessed, I am able to complete this adventure.
He arrives at the final part of his journey, to defeat the Omni-powerful Gigas. Gigas is the sole reason for his entire journey, but with the aid of his friends and his own powers he has acquired on his journey, defeating this enemy becomes a possibility. One final blow is delivered, and at long last, he has proven to himself that his seemingly impossible goal is in fact realistic.

While looking through some old files, I found this essay that I wrote about Earthbound. I compared my life to Ness's. This was my first attempt at my college essay. My teacher hated it and made me write another one. Maybe you guys will like it.
