My main issue of quandary is why Ness appears at a phone, of all places, after he is revived? I mean, shouldn't he appear at a hospital like the rest of his friends? The only time Ness is revived at a hospital is if one of his friends is alive and takes him there. If the entire party dies, not only do you start at the last phone you saved from, but Ness is the only one who is revived. One could only argue that, after Ness's party is defeated, some passerby finds Ness's body and takes him to the hospital. The doctor heals him and takes half of his money as compensation. Even if Ness has a million dollars in his pocket, the doctor will take it upon his or her self to take a half a million dollars as fair compensation when the average rate may only be a hundred dollars. However, it could also be that some of his money gets blown away after the battle as his lifeless body lies on the ground, not to mention the possibility of a gang of Mr. Saturn scavengers who make a living off robbing Ness every time he dies.
So Ness is revived, and he stumbles out to the last phone he saved at. This can be quite humorous if Ness died in the Scarabian desert and has to walk all the way back to the Deep Darkness bird phone with no PP before he can continue. Or, if you want to get real creative, you can pretend that Deep Darkness is like the afterlife world where Ness awakes after he dies, kind of like that weird place in DBZ.
In following with our current theory, what if Ness dies in the Fire Springs? Some tenda has to find Ness's body on their morning walk through the fire cave. Okay. Now what kind of a tenda is going to walk into the Fire Springs when it's full of the toughest enemies in the game. Honestly, I'd steer clear of any place full of an unlimited supply of Major Psychic Psychos. The only thing I can think of is if Ness isn't found by a random person and taken to a hospital, but if he instead musters up his courage and through an act of pure determination, stumbles out to the nearest payphone from which he saved. Now we're talking.
Except, there's some other connections that one could conceive. For one, does anything seem familiar about a hero that enters and exits the world through a telephone? I'm talking about The Matrix. Eagleland is like the Matrix, and Ness has to enter it through the telephones. The Starmen are like the agents. This would explain Ness's ability to use PSI- he can manipulate the physics of the Matrix. -The Apple of Enlightenment is the Oracle. Buzz Buzz is Morpheus. Pokey is the guy who betrays the team. The parallels are astonishing.
Okay, getting back to straight EarthBound. What other significance does the phone have? That's right, IT'S HIS DAD! (Hey, if a man can become a dungeon, then Ness's dad can become a telephone.) The voice Ness hears when he is knocked out it his dad's, and that no-man's-land with the blue light must be what the inside of the phone looks like. Then, after Ness gets the pep talk from his dad, his body is spit out from the receiver. Um, if I was a person working behind the counter and saw a phone give birth to a grown teenager, I'd be very frightened.
