EarthBound: Secrets Revealed
In a barrage of recent interviews Shigaesto Itoi has revealed many secrets of his greatest masterpiece. That is EarthBound the game we all know and love. For 8 years I have been playing this seemingly childish game, loving every minute of it. I never gave much thought to the lives the characters lived and the personalities they posess. In the past few days all that changed however as many of the seemingly unimportant charactaristics of my favorite game have been brought to very fluid life!
The first of these is that in the game Ness's father is never seen in the game. I always thought that he was away for a long trip. I never really thought about it that much. In JonBound a game by our very own Blue Antoid, his father was given a job as a computer engineer. In the interview Mr. Itoi revealed that this symbolized his time away from his daughter during the Mother project. A seemingly unimportant part of the game when revealed recently touched the hearts of many of the forumers at starmen.net. In a letter to her father she wrote at the end the japanese equivelent of "Slam... beep beep beep" a staple in EarthBound phone conversations.
Another revalation gave way when Mr. Itoi revealed the truth of the Mr. Saturn. These clumsy folk represented innocence as they were easily enslaved and naive enough to trust the Master Belch. Early in the project they were referred as "Mr. Stupid" but many of the programmers and planners thought the name unnecessarily harsh so he was instead named "Mr. Saturn" a name that would forever chime a sense of cuteness and quirkyness. It was also revealed that the font used in the Japanese version of Mother 2 for the Mr. Saturn was that of his daughter's handwritting in school.
Easily the most controversial secret revealed was that a charactar in Mother 2's cast was indeed homosexual. Many suggest that it is indeed Tony however without any proof given by Itoi himself I feel that the character's identity is yet unrevealed.
To the fans of EarthBound for the past eight years this game has been more than a game. It's a true expierience, one that has touched the hearts of everyone that has played. With these stirring secrets being told I believe that those that have been informed will never look at the game in quite the same way. Mr. Itoi has proven himself once again as a man that has given his all to defining a truly wonderful game. He has done what no other game developer has, he put his heart and soul into the project. I believe that the fans have come to see this and that's the reason that for almost any person that has given it a chance EarthBound could easily be their favorite game of all time. I truly hope that I will get a similar feeling from Mother 3 when it is released.
