A New Way to Play EarthBound

Okay, some of you have probably tried this before, but I am going to talk about it anyway. If you are one of those players who has beaten the game more times than it takes to get the Sword of Kings, then this will add a little variety to your game. Instead of always following the linear order of Giant Ant, Mondo Mole, Trillongage Sprout, Shroom, Plague Rat of Doom, Thunder and Storm, Electro Specter, and finally, Carbon Dog and Diamond Dog, why not mix things up a little bit. You can fight four of these bosses out of order, and save them to fight later in the game.

After defeating Carpainter and freeing Paula, you are faced with a choice. Should you fight Mondo Mole, who is out of the way and only holds a piece of the Sound Stone music and a way to get Paula's levels up really fast (though she will probably die early on)? Or should you return to Twoson and take care of matters there and return later? Most people, most of the time, choose to explore that little cave and defeat Mondo Mole. However, you can go to Twoson and later Threed simply by rescuing Paula.

You just got the Fly Honey from the Boogey Tent and gave placed the Zombie Paper around. After stopping by in Saturn Valley, you learn of Belch's base. You journey there and wipe out Master Belch. At this point, all the zombies and ghosts leave Threed and the tunnels, and you can journey on. Why worry about that little cave at the edge of Saturn Valley that you can come back to later? Fighting Trillongage Sprout later is just as fun as fighting him now, as you will see later.

Having crashed into the beach at Summers and blown away every last dollar at that store (who doesn't?), you set off to find something to do in this town. You meet a captian who talks about his wife who sits around in the Stoic Club all day and stares at a meaningless rock. After talking to her, she bakes you some Magic Cake. When you wake up, Poo has joined you and you set off again. Having read the Hieroglyphs and left the museum, you talk to the captian and he offers to carry you across the ocean for $80. Never mind what that phone call was as you stepped out of the museum, never mind something Poo casually mentioned about three rabbit statues blocking the caves, just journey on.

As you can see, if you change the order around, you can spice the game up a little. If you thinks this makes the game too easy later on, think again. Having gotten Poo and everyone up to above level 50 or so in one game, it still took several turns to defeat Trillongage Sprout and Poo was diamondized in the process. Also, when the eight Sanctuaries are spinning around in your head at the end of Magicant, instead of landing in the traditional Fire Springs, you can wind up in Magnet Hill or Lilliput Steps. Hopefully, this will add some variety to everyone as we wait for EB64.
