Thoughts on Mother 4?
Oddity 2: Electric Boogaloo
and there’s nothing you can say that will change my mind
First off, I believe the new Mother 4, also referred to as Frog4(don’t ask me why) has a waaaay better chance of releasing, which is a big thing with Mother fangames. Second, Oddity never actually got into legal trouble with Nintendo, they just feared they would due to Nintendo taking down other fangames, so they stayed ahead of the curve and changed before it could even happen. Thirdly, Mother 4 looks, sounds, and probably plays very awesome. I like how they did the Ninten/Ness thing with Lucas/Aaron. I feel like this is a proper direct sequel to mother 3, whereas oddity was set in the 70’s, which would have technically made it Mother -1. I also have heard they’re adding new mechanics as well. All in all I am glad we are getting a proper mother 4, and a proper Oddity.
I think it looks really cool, but I’m not sure why they feel the need to call it Mother 4. I would rather they call it something else to avoid confusion (or at least give it some kind of subtitle to avoid implying they’re the one true mother 4, which seems kinda arrogant.)
Oh yeah, I totally forgot they only rebranded because they didn’t want to get into legal trouble with Nintendo, not because they did.

Eh, I still wouldn’t say that’s the only reason. They wanted to rebrand. I’m sure after all this time they decided they would rather put all this hard work and potential into something that wasn’t tied to an existing thing, and instead give themselves far more room to innovate and come up with new things.
I am very eager for oddity but also expect it no time soon. As for Mother 4, I’m very taken aback at how suddenly it popped not existence, but it seems promising! I’ll be keeping a look out for it too.
Never in the history of entertainment will there be an affair, quite like it!
Every time I see a big brother character in a MOTHER fangame I worry. Will Jared be okay? Will he be kidnapped by the aliens(?)? Will he even be alive by the end of the game?
Anyway, it looks very pretty… it is really impressive. I do agree that personally I would prefer a different name, though. Since I would not include it with the three MOTHER games anyway, what with it being a fangame, I think the “MOTHER” label only brings risks(?), expectations and constraints. The game looks so good, I think they could make something truly unique.
Trailer Link Since It’s Not in The OP
Saw the trailer and figured I’d pay this place a visit since it seems they’re sticking to Youtube and Twitter (I really do come and go like Christmas music though). I’m really passionate about fan-games so as per usual with me this post is sort of a text wall (I tried to shorten/spoiler parts as needed).
I REALLY don’t want to jinx it but this actually looks somewhat promising. Trailer stuck a good balance between gameplay and cinematic, music was pretty catchy, art direction is nice and the website is simple and efficient. I’m mainly worried about the characters. I do sort of wish we got a tiny bit more characterization about the main four, but based on the website I think they could strike a nice dynamic: Aaron as the de-facto leader who’s rather confused/apprehensive about the situation at first since he’s from a small town but grows into the role, Maggie who serves as a driving force who tries her best to help in multiple ways, Troy as the seemingly aloof but wise person that helps to piece things together, and Trisme as the clumsy girl that motivates the group in her own way. All of that is headcanon, obviously, but it’s just an opinion on where I think their dynamic could/should go.
From Website:They’ll lift the veil of the untouchable entity pulling the earth’s strings, capable of bending the rules and stacking the odds against our heroes, just to harness the power of the Rift Shells for an absolute yet unknown purpose… But there’s nothing to worry about with your friends behind your back, right?
This has me intrigued; their enemy is described as someone so powerful that they can’t confront them directly and that they can bend the rules of…reality? Society? Both are interesting possibilities. It also seems like this all-powerful entity can’t just gather the Rift Shells themselves and instead has to harness their power some other way. Wild guess but assuming the Rift Shell is the needle-like object we saw in the trailer, then its safe to assume this entity doesn’t have a physical form they can use to interact with the world, similar to Giygas in Mother 2. Either that or they’re simply not on Earth or in another dimension (possibly hinted at by the use of the word Rift).
In any case, I actually think one of the reasons this project seems promising is because they DON’T have a subreddit/discord/forum. I’m not bashing fan-games that do have those, but I think that having less contact between the potential audience when the game hasn’t been released yet is a good approach to have. I still think you should wait until around 90% of the game is done before going public, but putting yourself out and knowing that there are people who are counting on you to deliver serves as good motivation too. The minute you have a official forum where you promise updates and people can create their own topics means that you’re insinuating that there will eventually be a product for there to be talked about. It could backfire horribly if not the case.

I seem to be alone in the boat at the moment, but I actually think it’s perfectly fine for the game to be called Mother 4. Oddity no longer has a monopoly on that name so it being up for grabs means that anything goes. Some people might argue that Oddity never did own the name but being the most popular project with the name (to the point where fanart with Travis alongside the other protagonists is fairly common) obviously meant people were reluctant to take it. It’s unfair to say that the devs are being arrogant and trying to insinuate that their sequel is the true one when, in reality, anyone is welcome to throw their hand into that ring. I mean, did you feel that way when Oddity used to be Mother 4? I don’t think it was named Mother 4 because they want people to accept it as Mother 4, naming the game Mother 4 means they love the franchise and they truly believe they can create their ideal vision of something worthy to hold that title.
However, if this turns out to be a major success then it’s possible fan-games will be even more reluctant to use the title Mother 4. This might sound cold-hearted, but I think that’s fine. I do believe fan-games should not be made for fame (which is why I advocate against making a Discord/Reddit), but completed Mother fan-games are so rare that one on the scale this trailer seemed to set would be quite impressive. That’s why Oddity is so popular, the success of Oddity or even this project would be both historic AND motivational for the fan-game community. Taking on the name only means you’re have even MORE motivation to not end up as vaporware, you truly have to give it your best effort. It might result in risks or stress or unmatched expectations, but isn’t that what any challenge is? The higher the wall you can climb, the higher you stand once you finally reach the top. The higher the wall you climb, the higher the chance of falling from a greater height and suffering from more pain because of it. Let me make this clear: they are not obligated to give anyone anything. But it is impossible to temper people’s reactions once you give them a taste of what’s to come. It’s a risk they’re willing to take, so I can only hope it will work out. If they fail, I won’t try and lie to say I won’t be disappointed; I will, but I don’t want that to happen. I don’t want it to happen to Oddity or any fan-game ever again.
A dream of mine I’ve had since I was in middle school is to create a Mother fan-game. The plot has changed constantly but now the idea is that it would take place between Mother 1 and Mother 2, set in an expanded America of the first game that only creates some slight connections between the two games and does not link their overall plots together. Cognitive Dissonance is one of the most popular fan-games that explicitly connects the first two games unlike my hypothetical game. I spend time wondering how many people would compare said game to CogDis or if I would come off as copying that game despite it not taking place in space or not trying to solve plotholes from the two games. The thing is, I think that’s inevitable and it shouldn’t stop people from doing things. People WILL compare Mother 4 to Oddity. That’s perfectly allowed, too. Certain forums have already done that and use it as a bashing point against the game. I don’t like drama but we have to be honest here: if this game comes out before Oddity, there is a good chance it will negatively affect the reception of Oddity itself. However, I don’t think it should stop people from trying. If they truly believe they can take on the name, so be it. If another fan game calls itself Mother 4 even after this project calls itself Mother 4, that’s ok too. So long as people truly give it their best shot and it doesn’t end up as vaporware, I don’t see the harm.
TL;DR Game looks promising, so I’m fine with calling it Mother 4 if they acknowledge the inevitable expectations it brings. All the more reason for it to succeed, as I hope it does.
im super excited for it actually
i dont know why i have this hangup, but i was really disappointed when oddity rebranded (well, specifically when they confirmed mother staples like PK or mr. saturn wouldnt be returning. if it were just the title, frankly it wouldnt bother me)
like, im still going to play oddity if it comes out within my lifetime, and ill probably love it, but ive got this feeling that this mother 4 will be more successful at filling the void than oddity will. time will tell, though
i also expect it to come out before oddity like others have also guessed, lol
