I’ve been working on an el neato card game…Won’t post too many details, I might drastically change it… I already have an example card done, and if you would like to help (image editing, rules, etc.), we can discuss it here. For the rules, fancy new cards, etc, you’ll have to MSN me….It’s in my signature.

I think I can improve the design of these if you’d like. Also, try making a template for “Magic Set Editor”, a free program for designing custom card for existing TCGs, or making your own!

Hrm…any chance of this becoming an online thing? I think that would be pretty neat, if I say so myself. If I had a set of rules, I might be able to help fine tune the mechanics of the game, if that would help.

The basis: One “team” plays as the heroes, and the other “team” plays as the baddies. A team can be anywhere between 1 and 4 players. You draw from a character’s deck (good guys) for weapons, PSI powers, etc. The enemies team is based off of either a level of the game. It’s sort of like an RPG, and there will be many elements from Earthbound.

The only reason that I’m not posting any specific rules right now is so that it’ll be a surprise, and to cover me up later if I change it drastically.

IMHO I feel the cards would look overall better if the art were done by the fans. It would a little crisper and more action-oriented.

Also, it looks a little simple here.

How about more stats like “Psi defense”, or "PK attack, and specific moves you can perform such as “PK Fire”.

Also, energy consumption, etc.

I don’t know, no offense, but at the moment it looks great, but, seems to be a bit boring. I feel a tcg should involve strategy besides just “I have this cool card here”.

If you want, I could give you some awesome 3D effects on those cards. You know, so it doesn’t look so flat maybe…

I like the idea, really I do, it’s just that I’d want them to look professionally made.

I’m looking at the guide (nice to have a copy on my computer ) and it frequently calls them ‘kids’. I don’t see anything about teenagers.

These very specific ages just jumped out at me, as I’ve NEVER seen a specific age for anyone in the game.

Hmm, okay… Well, here’s the rules so far. There’s just three easy stats, Attack, defense, and HP. Attack is added to certain PSI things, defense is subtracted from attack to give the final damage, and HP is the two, combined. If anyone wants to change the rules, go ahead, same with the template…we can do a Poll later on to finalize the game. Also, here’s the blank card template, in .psd, so that there’s multiple layers

How is collecting cards supposed to work for this? I mean, it is on the internet. So, I’m a little confused. Do we just like, print them out and randomly keep some and not others pretending we bought a deck or… what?

But we still have to print them out and glue both sides together to make a card, right?

And for the guy who asked about trading, it’d be more about the strategy, like in Pokemon and Magic as opposed to, say, baseball cards. Hope that helped

Heh, I planned on doing my own TCG, but mine would use a system similar to the one in Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo Tales. All I need to do is make some artwork, and my project is finished.

Well, I contemplated about a EBTCG, and working developing a new ruleset for CLTCG (now non-existent) I learned a bit.

1. Attacking cards
Card Types: Heroes (helpful characters in Mother), Villains (anyone “evil”). Covers pretty much everything.
Sub-types: Human, Insect, Alien, Plant, etc. Allows for more strategy
Icons: Can represent if PSI is used, and equipment types (guns, yo-yos, bats, etc.)
Stats: ATK, DEF, HP, SP. Why am I not using PP? I’ll elaborate later. Used SP and HP could be denoted with counters.
Skills/effects: Some cards always have skills. Like Boney’s “Sniff” could let you see an opponent’s hand, or say Starman has a PSI skill. Some cards could also utilize this for bonuses. Using a skill takes away skill points.

2. Equippable Cards
Weapons: Add ATK bonuses. Could be stacked.
Accessories: Add DEF bonuses.

Skills: Anything non-PSI. Can be almost anything. Can be used on PSI-users and non-PSI users alike.
PSI: Any existing PSI skill. Can be equipped to PSI users only.

3. Places
Places could add bonuses to primary types and and sub-types. The could also have certain effects, like discarding cards, etc.

4. Event Cards
Provide many effects.

Just some ideas.

Well, I roughed out a couple ideas when I was making the card:

• The red and blue numbers stand for attack and defense respectively, and work the same way as Magic the Gathering.
• The purple number stands for PP. There would be PSI ability cards with PP costs, and only characters with an equivalent or greater PP number would be able to cast them. So if Starstorm has a PP cost of 5, Geoff couldn’t use it (because he has 0 PP) but a character with 5 or more PP would be able to. PP don’t get expended, but a character can only use one PSI ability per turn.
• Equipment cards could be equipped on characters to augment their abilities (pretty straightforward). Only one piece of equipment per character at a time, and an equipment card has to be attached to a character or else it leaves play.
• Food cards can be played at any time and have some immediate, instantaneous effect (like damage prevention).
• Two types of creatures: ally and helper. Allies are named (like Jeff, Yokuba, Bubble Monkey) and only one copy of them can be in play at a time. Helpers are not named (Pigmask Soldier, Spiteful Crow, Desert Monkey) and multiple copies of them can be in play at a time.
• The black number stands for dollar cost. Dollars are generated by location cards. One location card can be played each turn, and each location card in play generates a fixed number of dollars for the player controlling it at the start of his or her turn. Dollars can be saved, spent, and stolen.

It seems like I’ve put a lot of thought into this, but I fiddle around with pen-and-paper type game rules all the time.

If I were the “enemies”, I’d probably save Giygas for last. There might be a rule for how many of him you can have in your deck, but I’d probably say only one.

Also, we could add in a d20 and roll for a SMAASSSH! Or, we could tally off on a piece of scratch paper, and every, say, 6 turns, it could be a SMAAASH!

Hm…I just don’t see a formula fitting into a TCG like that. Most people wouldn’t have to patience to figure out something like that…but anyways…I think that there should be a 1/128 chance of a “rare” card.

It’d be best to avoid heavy math and RPG elements. The best tabletop games have very simple mechanics that provide a rubric for complex strategies and dynamics. Like Settlers of Catan.

From what I can see there are Characters, Items, Places (Sanctuaries?), Status Effects, and PSI powers.

The cards are also in downloadable sets, compressed in some format (.lzh) that WinRAR can decompress.
