My suggestion? If you don't feel you're up to it, I say skip it. I'm sure it'd be nice to have if you're going for an EB-type look, but really, given that it's not a necessary feature to make a game good or interesting or any of that, I'd leave it until later and worry about the basic parts of making a game first, and if you get past the basics and the roadblocks THOSE will present alone, THEN come back to more complicated programming problems like caterpillar systems and the like.
One of these days, we need to start up a discussion on how best to actually start and FINISH making a game, and the primary guideline to follow there will be to KEEP THINGS SIMPLE.
